Out Of Home Deliveries are the Future of Package Receiving

23. August 2022

We'll tell you why.

These days, you can have anything delivered to your home. From clothing and electronics to food and medicines, delivery drivers bring everything we want right to our door. That's the theory because the reality is often different. Parcels are not delivered to homes because drivers don't know how to cope with the delivery volumes, in the long run, damage to parcels due to overcrowded delivery vans and eternal searches in parcel shops and at neighbours after parcels had to be delivered alternatively.
Is homedelivery unmanageable?
The answer is no. Homedelivery as it is currently operated is not manageable. We see the effects every day; congested roads, bad air and a system that has hardly changed for years. But home delivery has been the standard for so long that we find it hard to rethink. But our shopping habits have changed dramatically in recent years. We not only shop more but also shop differently. The range of products has also grown. Household appliances in particular, as well as garden and building supplies, are now more often bought online and then delivered by parcel services or haulage companies. And while receiving these goods at their destination is often logistically necessary, many small goods could alternatively be received Out Of Home (OOH).But these alternatives currently still often have weak points. Parcel shops and parcel stations can normally only be supplied by a specific supplier. Although some parcel shops enter into partnerships with several suppliers, this is rather a rarity. Moreover, these shops are often the ones that receive parcels from unsuccessful delivery attempts and are thus confronted with frustrated customers and drivers every day. In addition, the parcel shops are often left alone with the handling; they receive the necessary technology and instructions, but no support in setting up a storage system. As a result, these shops are quickly overwhelmed with large parcel volumes and, as a consequence, recipients and retailers are often annoyed by the process. No one wants that voluntarily, do they?
Out Of Home does not have to be so difficult

We know where the problems lie in home delivery and we know why recipients have been reluctant to use the OOH options so far. The only question that remains is how to change this. The situation is stressing all stakeholders and delivery services are looking for a way to make their processes not only more effective and successful, but also more customer-oriented and -friendly. But this requires a solution that is as convenient and secure as the recipient receiving the parcel in person.
Take back control
If you have your parcel delivered to your home, you lose control of it on the way from the sorting centre to you in the so-called last mile. Because even if you sit next to the doorbell all day, if your driver aborts the trip because he can't finish it in time, the rest of the process is out of your control. But what if you could send your parcel to a point in your immediate vicinity where your driver could deliver your parcels reliably and without problems?

What if?

Imagine you order something online. Maybe a new outfit for the weekend? Or you get a birthday present from your relatives? At checkout, you enter your PaketConcierge ID, which you've become so good at that it almost feels like you're still getting home delivery.
After the checkout, your mind is free to concentrate on other things. You still follow your shipment habitually. But you don't worry anymore, you'll be reliably informed as soon as your parcel is waiting for you. Yes, your parcel is waiting for you.
One day later, you receive a message on your mobile phone. Your parcel is ready for you to pick up at your Parcel Concierge. It's not convenient for you today, so you pick it up the next day. Your shop is on your street, so you can drop by spontaneously. While the waitress grabs your parcel from the well-stocked shelves, you think about how you used to run after your parcels. Armed with your pick-up slip or an e-mail, your ID and unsure whether it's really at the neighbour's because the information on the slip is a bit inaccurate. You are jolted out of your daydream when your parcel is handed to you. You confirm receipt and walk down the street to your front door. It took you a few minutes to pick up the parcel, but no longer than half a day, when you used to collect your parcels from the various shops in your district.
The next day you are in your home office. And you just turn off the doorbell. You don't have to wait for the parcel carrier. There's always free space in the cupboard in the hallway. It's where you used to keep your neighbours' parcels. But they now send their parcels to the same shop.
